From 50 Coffeehouses to 7,000: Twenty Years of Partnership with Starbucks

How two decades of strategic partnership shaped the distribution model serving Starbucks coffeehouses today.

In early 2006, QCD made its first deliveries to Starbucks in Eastern Washington. The route covered 50 coffeehouses. It was a modest beginning, and an early chance to show what dependable, detail-driven service could mean for a brand that was still growing into its future.

This year marks 20 years of that partnership. Today, QCD serves more than 7,000 Starbucks coffeehouses across 22 markets, roughly 140 times the footprint where it all began.

That growth didn't come from simply adding trucks and routes. It came from building something new alongside Starbucks. Over two decades, the two companies worked side by side to evolve Starbucks' distribution approach into a consolidated model, bringing what a coffeehouse needs together into a single, coordinated delivery. The model was refined market by market as menus, coffeehouse formats and volumes changed, and with each expansion it proved repeatable. Today it is a core QCD capability, running across our network with the consistency that thousands of locations demand every day.

The partnership has also grown well beyond the truck. QCD supports Starbucks FoodShare, helping unsold food reach community food banks rather than going to waste. We helped bring Mercado to coffeehouses as Starbucks expanded its offerings. And we execute the fresh lunch program, where tight freshness windows leave no room for error. In each case, the work moved past delivering cases and into advancing Starbucks' own priorities.

Starbucks has recognized that work along the way. QCD has received the Bravo Award, along with multiple Green Apron Awards, FoodShare Partnership Awards, 10 Siren Awards and more than 50 Distribution Excellence Awards. Each one reflects the daily consistency of our teams in the warehouse, on the road and at the door of every coffeehouse we serve.

The partnership continues to evolve. Through its Back to Starbucks plan, Starbucks has refocused on the coffeehouse itself: faster and more consistent service, a simpler menu, and coffeehouses that feel welcoming again. A strategy built on simplicity and consistency in the store depends on a supply chain that delivers the same way. As Starbucks brings new food and beverage innovation to its menu and refreshes coffeehouses across its footprint, QCD will keep doing what has defined the last 20 years: listening, adapting and building the distribution solutions that help Starbucks deliver on its vision, one coffeehouse at a time.

"Being Starbucks' largest distribution partner is something we earn every day," said Ryan Hammer, QCD President. "Twenty years in, this relationship is built on trust, reliability and the confidence that we'll deliver when it counts. As Starbucks simplifies their supply chain to support future growth, we're ready to grow right alongside them."

Twenty years ago, the story was 50 coffeehouses in Eastern Washington. The work since has been about earning the next twenty.
